Character Information
Character Name: Christopher "Kit" Kellen Rodriguez
Fandom: Diane Duane's Young Wizards series
Character History:
Kit was born on September 25, the youngest of three. When the story begins, he's in junior high school, living at home with his parents, his older sister Carmela, and their dog Poncho. Their oldest sister, Helena, lives at college. Kit was often teased at school for being short and having a Spanish accent, but he navigated school and life with surprising maturity.
He was in a used bookstore in NYC when he found his Wizarding Manual. He was alone in the woods trying his first spell when Nita Callahan found him. They began experimenting with magic together, both being science-minded (as befits Wizardry—a highly technical Art) wanting to confirm this unbelievable new fact of their lives. Their spellcasting landed them in an alternate world, facing off against the Lone Power: the one of the Powers That Be that introduced entropy to the universe, which wizards are dedicated to fighting and slowing—knowing they can never ultimately "win" but are succeeding in their service for as long as they can ease pain, preserve order, and slow decay. They learn that every new wizard goes through an Ordeal against the Lone Power, and this was theirs. They succeed, take the Oath, and become official wizarding partners, as well as best friends.
They dedicate their lives to being Wizards all-consumingly and gladly. Their work takes them all across the multiverse, though they remain also very invested in their families on earth. They also, as they age, begin to be attracted to one another, though it takes them years before openly addressing it.
Kit grew taller, never attempted to get rid of his accent, and after tangling with the Lone Power, it got even easier to deal/cope with other non-Lone-Power beings, both with assertiveness and desire to understand/cooperate.
Character Personality: Youngest member of a household of women and a feminist father. Pet peeves include bigotry, hypocrisy, internal logic failure, thoughtlessness/being inconsiderate, and making fun of peoples' food choices. Understands how to wait for one's moment, listen, find feeling present/valued not dependent on whether one's the center of attention (and how not to be nor demand to be), has a deep sense of fairness not just about big issues but about including everyone in a conversation and making sure to pass the focus/attention around, understands sharing one's power doesn't diminish one's own.
He tries not to let his own pet peeves get in the way of trying to elicit the best in others. Had been bullied a lot while younger for having a Spanish accent and being short and chubby. The first spell he was working on when Nita found him was to get the bullies to leave him alone (better defend himself and/or make them uninterested in him—a relatively nonmalicious starting place even for how far he's come!). Now that he's older, taller and slimmer, and starting to be a bit sought after, he keeps his feet on the ground and will never bully in turn, nor stand idly by when he sees it happening. (His accent's never going anywhere.) Though it's also important to him to see where the one doing the bullying is coming from and sensitively address that, too. Chances are in that situation, everyone's in pain and could do with some understanding, though it's rarer and harder to connect there than just give the victim a safe escape.
Even when there weren't many who'd turn to him for help, he's always had a deep sense of justice and community and desire to champion those who want/need it. Wizardry is his calling in part because being able to do so welcomedly defines his life. None of which is unusual for the type of person who tends to be chosen to be a wizard: one needs strong empathy, desire to help, be a good observer and listener with a keen mind and interest in solving problems. All this is certainly true of Kit.
He's not always great with restraining himself and not exceeding the Price of a given wizardry, overexerting himself or even losing himself in trying to understand/get into the shoes of the being or situation he's trying to work with. Especially when saving someone else is at stake. (Examples: nearly getting lost in his sperm whale form in Deep Wizardry, getting so deep into Darryl's mind he takes on some of Darryl's ASD traits and nearly gets trapped in his mind—almost trading places with him—in A Wizard Alone.)
He also has a particular interest in tinkering with machinery, loves his dog, and has an only occasionally eye-roll-inducing sense of humor.
Powers and Abilities: Where Nita's specialty is plants and living things, Kit's is machinery. He speaks the Speech, which can be understood by literally all things and beings in creation, and is a good negotiator—even with wizardry (aka The Art) relying on persuading the universe with intent and communication. Thanks to his close relationship to his dog, Ponch, he's picked up the animal talent of Scenting and has been able to walk into peoples' minds. Always was a bookworm with a good grasp of earthly math and science, made all the better by needing it for practicing wizardry. His "wand" is a car antenna that was given to him in the alternate reality of their first Trial.

Are you ready?
[The viewer may or may not be able to hear the device itself respond Already transmitting.]
Oh. Okay. Maybe next time we'll set up a cue word like… uh… "Action"? …Blech. No, nevermind, we'll work it out later.
Hola, everyone. I… um… get the premise of this place. But… is there any chance…
Basically I'm looking for my dog. His name is Ponch. I think he's capable of Awakening. I'd like to think so. Has that happened for anyone else? Have a pet follow them? Or anybody of the canine persuasion already… is the right term "here"?
I get why this place is important and everything but… we kind of work together and…
[And I'm gonna miss the hell out of him.]
Well. Thanks… and… sorry this is kinda inarticulate… still adjusting. Hopefully better once I start meeting more of you.
Third Person:
[It was so hard, choosing between the museum or the library, to check out first. Either would help orient him in the multiverse, and he had extreme weaknesses for both. He'd finally flipped a coin. Museum it was.
It was mind-blowing. And he'd seen some pretty brainblasting things.
He could easily spend hours staring at the Cyber Ninja or Robot Industrial Revolution exhibits. He should start by focusing on Earth, comparing what he knew with what was different.
But what he actually spent the most time staring at, nearly motionless as a display himself, was the complete history of Mars.
'Cause the last things he remembered on Earth… and of Neets…
(He'd sped a bit past the Natural History of Plants and Animals exhibit 'cause she would have loved it so much.Like he loved Joder, he missed her.)
It was the question, wasn't it… whether once Awakened, one could stand going back under even if they could. But the people they left behind… and yes, non-humans absolutely counted as people… he missed Neets, he missed Ponch, he missed his padres, even his hermanas.
People did it, didn't they…? He thought of Earth bodhisattvas—those who nearly achieved enlightenment but chose to stay just on this side of reality in order to teach it to others. (If he'd gotten that concept right. He couldn't remember anymore when he'd read about it.) But this was more like the Matrix, wasn't it…? Or maybe he was getting ahead of himself trying to analogize.
It was really interested yet sucked.
Especially when the last thing he remembered was him and Nita confessing they'd liked each other.
Or even better, skipping that part and going right to Okay we're boyfriend and girlfriend now and kinda have been for a while anyway.
He'd been… really… really… looking forward to finding out what that actually meant. —He knew what the words meant. But what it meant, how it would work, for them.
He found his hands curled around the protective railing for the display, and bent over for a bit to close his eyes. And found himself just picturing Neets's face.
Wish you were here.
He instantly berated himself for being selfish. Wishing her away from everyone she cared about, too.
…Almost everyone.
Just let her know, he sort of prayed (knowing it didn't work like that but sometimes you do it anyway) to the PTB, I didn't leave her on purpose. And if I can get back, I will.]
